Cavachon vs Cavapoo: The Real Differences

16 Aug 2026 8 min read

Both are Cavalier crosses, both are small and sweet — but the Bichon and Poodle sides produce genuinely different coats, energy levels and grooming bills.

What each cross actually is

A Cavachon is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel crossed with a Bichon Frise. A Cavapoo is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel crossed with a Poodle. They share the Cavalier half, which is where the gentle, people-loving temperament in both comes from.

The difference is entirely in the other parent, and it is a real difference. The Bichon brings a soft, cotton-like coat and a relaxed, cheerful disposition. The Poodle brings a curlier coat, more reliably low shedding, and noticeably more mental energy.

Both mature at a similar size — roughly 5 to 9 kg — and both sit comfortably within HDB's approved small-dog criteria.

Coat and shedding

This is the most practical difference. The Cavachon coat is soft, wavy and cotton-textured, and while it is low-shedding, it is generally less so than a Cavapoo's. Cavachons also change colour dramatically as they mature — ruby and apricot markings often fade towards cream, which surprises owners who chose a puppy on colour alone.

The Cavapoo coat, particularly in F1b puppies bred back to a Poodle, is curlier and holds hair more tightly. That makes it the safer choice for allergy-conscious households, though neither cross is genuinely hypoallergenic.

Both need professional grooming every four to six weeks at S$60 to S$100 a session, and both need daily brushing at home. If anything, the Cavachon's cotton coat mats slightly faster during the puppy-to-adult coat change at six to ten months — we cover that transition in detail in our Cavachon coat change guide.

Energy, trainability and noise

Cavapoos are the brighter and busier of the two. The Poodle influence makes them fast learners who genuinely enjoy training, puzzle toys and having a job — and a bored Cavapoo will invent one, usually involving your shoes.

Cavachons are calmer and less demanding mentally. They are still trainable and eager to please, but they are more content to spend the afternoon on the sofa. For a quieter household or an older owner, that is often the better fit.

Neither is a notably barky breed, which matters in an HDB corridor. Both, however, are strongly people-oriented and prone to separation anxiety — this is the trait to plan around with either cross, not size or coat.

Exercise needs are similar: 45 to 60 minutes across the day, ideally in the early morning or evening to avoid Singapore's heat.

Health considerations

Both inherit the Cavalier side's known predispositions, particularly mitral valve heart disease, so screening of the Cavalier parent matters for both crosses. Ask any seller, including us, for the parents' health documentation.

Both are also prone to ear infections thanks to those drop ears, which Singapore humidity makes worse. Weekly ear checks and thorough drying after baths and swims are a routine part of owning either.

The Poodle side of a Cavapoo brings a slightly higher chance of patellar luxation and progressive retinal atrophy; the Bichon side of a Cavachon adds a tendency towards skin allergies and tear staining. Neither list should put you off — they simply tell you what to watch for and what to ask about.

Which is right for you?

Choose a Cavachon if you want the calmer dog, you like a soft cotton coat, you are relaxed about colour changing as the puppy matures, and you would rather not commit to daily training and enrichment.

Choose a Cavapoo if allergies are a real consideration in your household, if you enjoy training and want a dog that engages with it, or if you want a slightly more active companion for regular walks.

For most Singapore families with children and a moderately busy schedule, either works well — the Cavalier half is doing most of the temperament work in both. Come and meet them at our East Coast Road showroom, or book a 45-minute play date on WhatsApp and see which one gravitates to you.
