Why a Bernese costs more than most breeds

Bernese are among the hardest breeds to bring into Singapore responsibly. Litters are small, ethical overseas breeders health-test before breeding (including hip and elbow scoring), and very few puppies are released for export each season. A large-breed puppy also needs temperature-controlled handling, an approved crate, veterinary sign-off at both ends and AVS permits. That is why our guide band is about S$8,000–S$9,500, and why a much cheaper Bernese should worry you rather than tempt you. Where a puppy sits in the band comes down mainly to markings and litter size.

Ongoing cost of owning a Bernese Mountain Dog in Singapore

Budget roughly S$300–S$450 a month once your Bernese Mountain Dog puppy is home. Food and grooming are the two recurring line items that surprise most first-time owners, so plan for them before you commit.

There is also a Singapore-specific cost: cooling. A double-coated breed from a cool climate needs reliable air-conditioning during the day, and that shows up on your utilities bill every month. We don't publish a figure because it depends on your home and tariff. Budget for it honestly. Insurance is worth serious thought too: premiums are higher for large dogs, and many policies exclude breed-related conditions, so read the exclusions.

Why cheap Bernese Mountain Dog puppies are a red flag

Listings well below S$6,000 usually mean undocumented imports, no AVS licence behind the sale, or puppies moved on before they were ready to leave their litter. Ask any seller for their AVS licence number, the breeder's name and the puppy's health records before you place a deposit — we're happy for you to ask us exactly the same questions in person.

Deposits, payment and what happens next

A deposit reserves a specific Bernese Mountain Dog puppy and is only taken after you've met the puppy or seen full video and paperwork. The balance is settled at collection in our showroom, where we walk you through the health records, feeding plan and the first week at home. Our 48-hour health guarantee covers certain specified genetic diseases where a certified vet declares the puppy unfit to be sold. It is subject to terms; ask us for the full conditions.

HDB rules and housing

The Bernese Mountain Dog is not named on HDB's Schedule to the Housing and Development (Animals) Rules 2024. That is a named list of 61 breeds plus item 62 (a cross of any two listed breeds), not a size test. So a Bernese is not eligible for an HDB flat, however calm the dog. It suits condos and landed homes where MCST by-laws allow a 36–52 kg dog. See HDB's Keeping Pets page.

Space, exercise and daily routine

Bernese are calm indoors but still need 45–60 minutes of gentle daily activity; avoid hard running before 18 months while the joints are still forming. Whatever the breed, walks in Singapore belong in the cooler hours — before roughly 9am and after 7pm — with water on hand and a quick pavement temperature check with the back of your hand. On rainy days, swap the walk for scent games, puzzle feeders or short training drills indoors.

Family, kids and other pets

Bernese are famously patient with children and quietly tolerant of other pets, though their sheer size means toddlers should be supervised during the clumsy adolescent months. You're welcome to bring your children to meet our puppies at the showroom so you can see the dynamic for yourself before deciding.

Temperament, training and neighbours

Gentle, sensitive and slow to mature, Bernese respond badly to harsh handling and beautifully to calm, consistent reward-based training. Start crate training and toilet routines from day one, keep training sessions short and reward-based, and socialise your puppy with lifts, void decks and delivery trolleys early — in dense Singapore housing, a confident dog is a quiet dog.

Managing heat and humidity

This is an alpine breed, so air-conditioning is not optional. Give your Bernese cool tiled floors, indoor rest through the hottest hours, and walks strictly at dawn and after sundown. Watch for heavy panting, brick-red gums, thick drool or wobbliness — the early signs of heat stress. Cool your dog with room-temperature water on the belly and paws, never ice water, and call your vet immediately.

Coat, skin and grooming

The long tri-colour double coat needs brushing two to three times a week — daily when they blow coat — plus a professional groom every 6–8 weeks. Never shave it; the undercoat insulates against heat. Dry the coat thoroughly after every bath — damp fur in our humidity is a common trigger for hot spots and yeast — and check ears weekly, as Singapore's climate makes ear infections common in dogs with drop or heavily coated ears.

Feeding and healthy growth

Feed a large-breed puppy formula with controlled calcium across three meals until six months to keep growth slow and steady — fast growth is the enemy of large-breed joints. Keep your puppy lean; excess weight is the most avoidable contributor to joint problems later in life. Fresh water should always be available, and food portions adjusted every few weeks as your puppy grows.

Vet care and health screening

Joint health is the thing to watch in this breed — keep growth slow, avoid stairs and slippery floors in the first year, and have your vet check hips and elbows at annual reviews. Complete the vaccination series on schedule and start heartworm prevention early — mosquitoes make heartworm a year-round risk in Singapore. Every Bernese Mountain Dog we import arrives with breeder health records, so your own vet has full history from the very first visit.

From breeder to our East Coast Road showroom

Puppies stay with their litter until they are old enough to travel, fly on approved routes, then clear AVS import and quarantine requirements before arriving with us. Each puppy is examined by our vet on arrival, settled at the showroom, and only listed once we're satisfied it is healthy, eating well and comfortable with people.

What happens when you visit

Book a private 45-minute play date at 278 East Coast Road, Singapore 428944. You'll meet the puppy in a quiet room, see the health records and import paperwork, and talk through food, crate setup and the first week at home. All collections happen in-store so we can hand over properly — we don't deliver puppies.

Because litters are small and infrequent, most Bernese families join a waitlist rather than buying a puppy already in store. That is normal for the breed, not a sales tactic.
