HDB rules and housing

The Old English Sheepdog is not on HDB's approved small-dog list, so it can only be kept in a private condominium or a landed home in Singapore. A full-grown OES reaches 27–45 kg and stands 53–61 cm at the shoulder, well outside HDB's approved small-breed list. Condo owners should also check their MCST by-laws, as some developments cap dog weight or restrict lift access for larger breeds. If you live in an HDB flat, an approved alternative such as the Maltipoo, Cavapoo or Japanese Spitz gives you a similar temperament in a compact size.

Space, exercise and daily routine

Old English Sheepdogs need around 60 minutes of daily activity plus mental work; they're herding dogs, so trick training and scent games matter as much as walking. Whatever the breed, walks in Singapore belong in the cooler hours — before roughly 9am and after 7pm — with water on hand and a quick pavement temperature check with the back of your hand. On rainy days, swap the walk for scent games, puzzle feeders or short training drills indoors.

Family, kids and other pets

OES are wonderfully patient, playful family dogs, but their size and enthusiasm mean toddlers need supervision through the bouncy adolescent stage. You're welcome to bring your children — and your current dog, with a diaper on — to meet our puppies at the showroom so you can see the dynamic for yourself before deciding.

Temperament, training and neighbours

Sociable, funny and sensitive, an OES dislikes being isolated and does best where the family is home often and training stays gentle and consistent. Start crate training and toilet routines from day one, keep training sessions short and reward-based, and socialise your puppy with lifts, void decks and delivery trolleys early — in dense Singapore housing, a confident dog is a quiet dog.

Managing heat and humidity

A heavy coat plus tropical humidity means air-conditioning, cool floors and dawn or after-dark walks are essential. Never shave to the skin; a shorter clip with the undercoat intact is safer. Watch for heavy panting, brick-red gums, thick drool or wobbliness — the early signs of heat stress. Cool your dog with room-temperature water on the belly and paws, never ice water, and call your vet immediately.

Coat, skin and grooming

That famous shaggy double coat is the single biggest commitment of the breed — brush right to the skin three to four times a week and groom professionally every 6–8 weeks, or keep a shorter working clip suited to Singapore. Dry the coat thoroughly after every bath — damp fur in our humidity is the single biggest cause of hot spots and yeast — and check ears weekly, as Singapore's climate makes ear infections common in dogs with drop or heavily coated ears.

Feeding and healthy growth

Feed a large-breed puppy formula with controlled calcium across three meals until six months so growth stays slow and joints develop properly. Keep your puppy lean; excess weight is the most avoidable contributor to joint problems later in life. Fresh water should always be available, and food portions adjusted every few weeks as your puppy grows.

Vet care and health screening

Hip scoring and eye testing on the parent dogs are important in this breed; our breeders provide full clearances, and your vet should recheck hips annually. Complete the vaccination series on schedule and start heartworm prevention early — mosquitoes make heartworm a year-round risk in Singapore. Every Old English Sheepdog we import arrives with breeder health records, so your own vet has full history from the very first visit.
