Border Collie Singapore: Energy, Housing & Who Should (Not) Get One
5 Oct 2026 8 min read
A Border Collie suits very few Singapore homes. Not an HDB breed, needs serious daily work and heat care — an honest fit check, cost guide and who should skip one.
The short answer
A Border Collie suits very few Singapore homes, and we say that as a shop that imports them. The right home is a condo or landed house whose rules allow a medium-sized dog, with someone who will give it real exercise and daily training in the cooler hours, every day, for years. It is not an HDB dog: the Border Collie is not on HDB’s list of approved breeds. And it is not the breed for anyone who wants a calm sofa companion.
Furgive You SG is an AVS-licensed puppy shop (Licence AS24C00019) at 278 East Coast Road, Singapore 428944, open Tuesday to Sunday, 12pm–6pm, by appointment. Our puppies are ethically imported from overseas breeders. We do not breed locally.
Why Border Collies trend in Singapore searches
Semrush search data for Singapore puts border collie singapore at about 320 searches a month (keyword difficulty 14, CPC 0.28). Related searches such as border collie singapore hdb, border collie singapore price and border collie cost suggest people are asking whether one could work for them, not just looking for a puppy.
The appeal is obvious. Border Collies are clever and responsive, and they look brilliant in videos doing agility, frisbee or tricks. The clips leave out the years of daily training behind them. Our Border Collie page describes the breed as “a driven, athletic working dog that thrives with structured activity and training”.
Exercise and mental stimulation reality
Our Border Collie page states that Border Collies need at least 60–90 minutes of physical activity each day, plus training and mental work. Both parts matter. A long walk tires the legs, not the brain, and a herding dog with nothing to think about will find its own job.
The hub is blunt about what that looks like: “a bored Collie invents its own job, usually one you won't enjoy”. In a Singapore apartment, that can mean barking at lift chimes, pacing, chewing, or nipping at running children.
Daily mental work at home can include:
short recall and impulse-control drills, two or three times a day
scent games and puzzle feeders, so meals take effort
fetch and agility-style games that channel the herding drive
indoor training on wet or very hot days, rather than skipping the session
A simple test: if exercise would honestly happen “weekends, mostly”, a Collie will struggle with you.
HDB / condo suitability
HDB flats: no. Under the Housing and Development (Animals) Rules 2024, a residential HDB lessee may keep one dog only, and it must be an “applicable dog”. That means a breed named in the Schedule, or a dog adopted from an animal welfare organisation under a rehoming scheme that HDB names on its website. There is a separate category for assistance dogs of handlers registered with MSF. HDB’s Keeping Pets page says the same: one dog from the approved list per flat, with fines of up to $4,000 for owners who breach the rule.
The Schedule is a named list of 61 breeds plus item 62, a cross of any two of them. It is not a weight test. The Border Collie is not on it. Two names cause confusion: Border Terrier (item 9) and Shetland Sheep Dog (item 47) are listed, but neither is a Border Collie. A Collie cross is not covered either, because item 62 needs both parents to be listed breeds.
The Rules also say a lessee who wants to keep a dog that is not on the list needs HDB’s prior written permission. That is not a back door. HDB’s pets page does not describe a public application for it, and no one can promise it will be granted. We will not sell a Border Collie to an HDB household on the hope that permission comes later. For flats, start with our HDB-suitable breeds guide.
Condos and landed homes: possibly, after checking. Private housing sits outside the HDB Schedule, but that does not mean anything goes. Read your MCST by-laws: some cap dog size or weight, or restrict lift use and common areas. Our Border Collie page gives an adult as about 14–20 kg and 46–56 cm at the shoulder. Check those figures against your by-laws before you pay a deposit.
Whatever your housing, your dog needs a licence from AVS. The AVS website is the official source, and our dog licence guide covers the steps.
Climate and coat
Our hub describes a medium double coat. As general knowledge, that coat evolved for cool, damp hill country, not for Singapore heat and humidity.
The biggest risk is the dog’s own drive. Our Border Collie page warns that a working breed with a double coat “will happily run itself into heat stress because the drive overrides the discomfort”. So you set the limits:
exercise at dawn or after dark (the hub suggests before roughly 9am and after 7pm)
use shaded routes, carry water, and check the pavement with the back of your hand
stop on hot days, even when the dog wants more
know the warning signs the hub lists: heavy panting, brick-red gums, thick drool and wobbliness. Cool the dog with room-temperature water on the belly and paws, never ice water, and call your vet.
For coat care, the hub recommends brushing two to three times a week and a professional groom every 8–10 weeks, with thorough drying after every bath. In our humidity, damp fur is a common cause of hot spots. Check the ears weekly as well.
Price bands and first-year cost
People searching border collie singapore price or border collie price singapore often expect one number. There isn’t one, and this is not a stock quote. Our Border Collie page and puppy price guide both give a guide band of about S$4,500 to S$7,000. Where a particular puppy sits depends on coat and colour, age on arrival and litter size. Always confirm an individual puppy’s price with us.
Our hub lists what the price includes: vaccinations and deworming suitable for the puppy’s age, an AVS microchip and registration paperwork, import permits, health certificates and quarantine compliance, clearance through AVS import checks, a vet health certificate, a starter kit and lifetime WhatsApp aftercare. See what's included.
The bigger border collie cost is ongoing. Our hub estimates roughly S$200–S$330 a month once the puppy is home, with food, grooming, parasite prevention, annual vet checks and optional insurance as the main lines. Add twelve months of that to the guide band and a rough first-year guide is about S$6,900 to S$10,960. That is arithmetic from our published ranges, not a guarantee. It does not include one-off items such as a crate, bedding, toys and training classes, or vet bills you did not plan for.
Training commitment
Our hub calls the breed “brilliant and highly biddable”. The catch is that a Collie learns whatever you teach, bad habits included, and it picks them up just as quickly.
From day one:
Crate and toilet routines start the first evening.
Keep sessions short and reward-based: several brief ones a day beat a single long one.
Socialise early with lifts, corridors, delivery trolleys and traffic noise once your vet agrees. In dense housing, a confident dog is usually a quieter dog.
Redirect herding. Heel-nipping is instinct, not spite. Channel it into fetch and structured games, and give children clear rules too.
Tell your vet the breed. Our hub notes that hips, eyes and MDR1 drug sensitivity are the breed-specific points to discuss.
Who should choose a different breed
We would rather lose a sale than see a Collie rehomed a year later. Choose a different breed if:
you live in an HDB flat. Use our HDB-suitable breeds guide instead.
your weekdays are long and unpredictable, and exercise would mostly happen at weekends.
you want a calm companion that is content with short walks.
your condo by-laws cap dog size or weight, or restrict lift use.
you have never trained a dog and do not plan to work with a trainer.
If you have private housing and want a different energy or temperament, two of our breeds are worth comparing. Neither is an HDB alternative.
Pembroke Welsh Corgi: a smaller herding dog, about 10–14 kg according to our Corgi page, and still a bright, active dog that needs daily walks and training. Not HDB-approved, so condo or landed homes only.
Golden Retriever: a people-focused family dog, generally easier-going than a Collie but bigger. Our Golden Retriever page gives 25–34 kg and 60–90 minutes of daily activity, and notes that Goldens are typically not HDB-approved. Private housing only.
How we match families (Furgive You SG showroom visit)
We do not deliver puppies; every collection happens at our showroom.
WhatsApp us on +65 8767 4515. Tell us your housing type, your condo by-laws if relevant, and what a normal weekday looks like.
Book a 45-minute play date at 278 East Coast Road, Tuesday to Sunday, 12pm–6pm, by appointment. Bring the children, so you can see how a herding puppy responds to them.
Review the paperwork: the vaccination card and vet health certificate, and the import paperwork, which you can view in the shop.
Join the waitlist if needed. Border Collies are uncommon here, and our hub notes that you do not need to pay a deposit just to join the list.
