How Many Times Should I Feed My Cavapoo Puppy?

8 Aug 2026 6 min read

Feeding frequency by age, how much food a Cavapoo actually needs, when to switch to adult food, and the low blood sugar risk small puppies face.

Feeding frequency by age

From 8 to 12 weeks, feed a Cavapoo puppy four meals a day, spaced roughly every four hours during waking hours. From 3 to 6 months, drop to three meals a day. From 6 to 12 months, two meals a day is usually right, and most adult Cavapoos stay on two meals for life.

Consistent timing matters as much as frequency. Predictable meals make toilet training dramatically easier, because digestion becomes predictable too. Aim for meals at the same hours daily — for example 7am, 11am, 3pm and 7pm for a young puppy.

Never leave food down all day. Free feeding makes it impossible to notice appetite loss, which is often the first sign a puppy is unwell, and it removes your most powerful training currency.

How much food, in practice

A Cavapoo typically matures between 5 and 9 kg, so daily food volume is small — usually around 100 to 180 grams of a good-quality puppy kibble per day at peak growth, split across the day's meals. Always start with the feeding guide printed on your specific food, because calorie density varies widely between brands, then adjust to body condition.

Body condition beats the chart. You should be able to feel ribs easily under a thin layer of covering, see a waist from above, and see a tuck from the side. If ribs are invisible, reduce by ten per cent; if ribs are sharply visible, increase by ten per cent.

Remember that training treats count. If you are doing several short training sessions a day, take that portion out of the measured daily allowance rather than adding it on top.

Watch for low blood sugar in small puppies

Small-breed puppies under about 12 weeks can develop hypoglycaemia if meals are missed or spaced too far apart, particularly after a long play session or a stressful day. Warning signs are wobbliness, glazed eyes, unusual lethargy, shivering and, in severe cases, collapse or seizure.

If you see early signs, rub a small amount of honey or glucose syrup on the gums and contact your vet immediately. Prevention is simple: never skip a meal, keep sessions short in the early weeks, and feed a small snack before bedtime for very young puppies.

Choosing and changing food

Use a complete puppy or all-life-stages food with a named meat as the first ingredient. Cavapoos are small dogs, so a small-breed puppy kibble with an appropriately sized piece is easier to chew and better calorie-matched.

Keep your puppy on whatever food they arrived on for the first two weeks at home; a diet change on top of a new environment is a common cause of loose stools. When you do switch, transition over seven days: 25 per cent new for two days, 50 per cent for two days, 75 per cent for two days, then fully new.

Fresh water must be available at all times, especially in Singapore's climate. Wash the bowl daily — humidity encourages biofilm faster here than in temperate countries.

Treats, human food and what to avoid

Keep treats to under ten per cent of daily calories. Safe options include small pieces of plain boiled chicken, carrot, cucumber and commercial single-ingredient training treats. Avoid grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, chocolate, macadamia nuts, cooked bones and anything containing xylitol, all of which are toxic to dogs.

Cavapoos are enthusiastic eaters and gain weight easily, and excess weight in a small dog aggravates patellar luxation and heart strain. Weigh your puppy monthly and keep a note — it is the simplest early-warning system you have.

If you are collecting a Cavapoo puppy from our East Coast Road showroom, we send you home with the current feeding schedule and food so the transition is as smooth as possible.
